Learning To Drive

These pages will document my experience of learning to drive lesson by lesson.

I should create a summary of each lesson here and then have a link to the page detailing that lesson in particular.

Lesson 1:

When you first get into the car you need to check the following:

Preparing:

  • Seat Position,
  • Seat Belt,
  • Mirror Alignment.

When you are ready to set off:

Starting the car and putting it into first gear:

  • Ignition,
  • Fully depress clutch pedal
  • Put the car into 1st gear (without looking at gear stick)

Setting Off (BOSH: Bite Observe Signal Handbrake):

  • Bite:
    • Gently depress gas pedal (until it purrs),
    • Raise the clutch to the biting point (feel the car pull slightly).
  • Observe: Check the mirrors and look over shoulder to the side of the car for the blind spot.
  • Signal: Indicate right to show that we are pulling off and right.
  • Handbrake: Release the handbrake and off you go!

Stopping: (Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed (MS(P&S))

  • Mirrors: Check mirrors - rear view and left.
  • Signal: Indicate left to show that you are pulling over and stopping.
    • Position: Move over to the left and get close to the curb.
    • Speed: At the same time be braking and reducing speed. Finally depress the clutch and brake.

Then 1, 2, 3:

  • Handbrake: Apply the handbrake.
  • Gear: Knock the gear back into neutral.
  • Signal off: Return the indicator to an at rest position.
