Learning To Drive

These pages will document my experience of learning to drive lesson by lesson.

What I did in Lesson 2:

In lesson two I practiced changing gear and negotiating junctions.

When changing gear you need to:

Changing Gear:

  • Ensure that your speed is low enough or high enough for the choosen gear.
  • Fully depress clutch pedal
  • Put the car into the choosen gear (without looking at gear stick).
  • Raise the clutch evenly.
  • Depress the accelorator

Starting the car and putting it into first gear:

  • Ignition,
  • Fully depress clutch pedal
  • Put the car into 1st gear (without looking at gear stick)

Junctions: MSPSL

  • Mirror Signal Position Speed Look

Stopping: (Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed (MS(P&S))

  • Mirrors: Check mirrors - rear view and left.
  • Signal: Indicate left to show that you are pulling over and stopping.
    • Position: Move over to the left and get close to the curb.
    • Speed: At the same time be braking and reducing speed. Finally depress the clutch and brake.

Then 1, 2, 3:

  • Handbrake: Apply the handbrake.
  • Gear: Knock the gear back into neutral.
  • Signal off: Return the indicator to an at rest position.
